3rd 6-WeeksIn this last 6-weeks of the Fall Semester, we are finally in a position to bring four of the landmark theories in classical physics together - Newton's 4 Laws of Motion. These laws will lead us into a study of energy and momentum and a brief introduction to fluids and thermodynamics. During this 6-weeks don't be suspicious when your student(s) says they have to go play pool, check out a Karate Class, and go skating as homework.
Week 1-2: Newton's Four Laws Students will expand their understanding of Newton's 1st 3 Laws which deal with contact forces to include the gravitational force ( a "non-contact" force). Week 2-4: Energy, Power, Work, and Momentum. Student will finish their study of Mechanics with an exploration of energy and momentum, why we say they are conserved, and how we see evidence of their conservation everyday. Week 4- 5: Fluids & Thermo We will introduce an overview of Fluids and the Laws of Thermodynamics addressing questions about how it is that airplanes can fly and boats can float even though they are very heavy. Week 5: Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) Each semester closes with students being given a comprehensive assessment over the material covered. This is not the Final. It is the last major grade for the 3rd 6-weeks. Unlike the Final, every student takes the CBA. It gives students the opportunity to bring together everything we have covered this semester. This is a very valuable skill. |
